The Notranjska region, situated
in the south-west, the most woody area of Slovenia, is a little
world for itself that differs from the other parts of the
country in the vast forest providing a home for wild animals,
in a wide range of karst phenomena, but mostly in its people.
The Notranjska region is planted with high plateaus, among
which nest green jewels: karst fields turning into lakes and
back to meadows, rivers, that often leave a surface and descend
into the underworld, caves and abysses, fairy castles, lively
nature and almost forgotten villages, where herds of roe-deer
are not unusual guests. The Notranjska region is the right
place to escape from traffic jams into an unspoiled nature’s
lap. This is the place where you can observe a buzzard on
a mice hunt, coddle yourself with listening to old fisherman’s
stories, jump into a new day on a horse back or admire magic
shapes of caves that are never ending masterpieces of water
and stone. Yes, the Notranjska region is a home to water,
stone, forest, wind, and rain and rainbows, which recall sun
to life again and again. The one in the green heart of Slovenia,
exploding on a surface of waters and land, and the one in
the hearts of people, which also clings to visitors with a
catching speed.

The natural beauties
worth visiting in the Notranjska region are numerous.
After visiting the famous Postojna Caves and the nearby
Pivka and Črna Caves, which belong to the Postojna cave
system, too, we continue our way from Postojna down
the winding road to the Planina karst field, which sometimes
in a rainy season turns to lake, providing a stop-over
for a flock of wild ducks. Early in the summer, the
banks of the Unica river offer fantastic, rarely visited
beaches, where we are often amused by colourful dragon-flies.
The Unica river is also a wonderful place for fishing,
kayaking and canoeing. From here, we drive to Lake Cerknica,
the only intermittent karst lake, which changes its
face not only during a year, but also during a season.
We leave this paradise for nature lovers, especially
bird-watchers, and continue down the forest road in
the direction of the Gorenje Jezero village. From there,
there are only few kilometres to the unusual landscape
of the Bloke Plateau. Low marsh with many windings of
the Bloščica brook, and thick tufts of sedge and other
rare swampy plants possess a charm that cannot be described
in words. |
The wavy land of plains, valleys and low
hillocks overgrown by pine and spruce wood is perfect for
sleighing in winter, while during the rest of the year this
is an ideal place for biologists, strollers, cyclists and
riders. Animal lovers leave from here for the Snežnik regional
park or the Javorniki hill. Macadam roads lead through a vast
forest area, where you can observe forest birds, foxes, rabbits,
roes and roe-bucks, deer and hinds, as well as bears, if you
get lucky, on evening “safaris”. The regional park Rakov Škocjan
is also home to wild animals, but known specially for its
magnificent karst phenomena - the Great and Small Natural
Bridge, which are remains of the collapsed underground tunnel.
And if you want to go really “in the wild”, you put on your
boots and leave down the stream of the roaring Iška river,
take a bath in the natural pools of the Zala river or look
at the Križna Cave’s interior by boat.
The Notranjska region certainly does not
lack cultural sights, as well as events. The most significant
and worth visiting are the Predjama Castle - one of the most
picturesque buildings in Slovenia, hanging dramatically in
the middle of a 123-metre cliff, concerts in the acoustic
church of the village of St. Volbenk in Zelše, a traditional
carnival in the town of Cerknica, a ride in a horse-drawn
carriage on the banks of Lake Cerknica or a horse-drawn sleigh
in winter, the Snežnik Castle - a well preserved three-storey
castle with the interior from the 19th century and very lovely
surroundings, and a visit to the only man who makes traditional
Bloke skis at the village of Nova Vas.
